A Thru-Hiker's Heart
Tales of the Pacific Crest Trail

A new book by “No Way” Ray Echols

A Thru-Hiker's Heart: Tales of the Pacific Crest Trail

The Story

On May 15, 2006, long-distance hiker “No Way” Ray Echols was killed when he fell from a 200-foot cliff along the Pacific Crest Trail. He had 50 years experience in the high country. In the previous year, he had completed the 2,650-mile trail from Mexico to Canada, and was hiking it again.

He left behind these tales of the experience of this amazing trail. They are stories of encounters with hikers and town folk, and encounters with the solitude of the soul. These are not only stories of the many miles, wild weather, rattlesnakes and lightning strikes. They also tell about the exaltation of the wilderness, and about the fun of trail magic and all-you-can-eat buffets. In the eyes of other hikers and everyday people along the trail, he glimpses our human courage and kindness. Here are the reasons we follow our dreams to heights we never imagined.

Early Reviews

“At turns humorous and philosophical, “No Way Ray’s” account of his journey on the PCT is peppered with anecdotes of the natural and human history surrounding this magnificent trail. Ray’s on-trail musings offer insight into the mind of a solo thru-hiker, and a glimpse at the essence of the trail that has transfixed so many people.”
Liz Bergeron
Executive Director, Pacific Crest Trail Association

“Whimsical, mystical, educational, introspective and at times laugh out loud funny, “No Way Ray’s” A Thru-Hiker’s Heart is a great read for anyone who loves the outdoors in general and long-distance hiking in particular. Highly recommended.”

“Wilderness is often a mirror for the soul — and the author was molded for decades by the Sierra Nevada and the outdoors. A Thru-Hiker’s Heart is a recounting of one man’s journey into the wilderness of himself.”
